'The church, which occupies the site of an ancient monastery, close to the shore near the town, was built in 1768, at the expense of the noble family of McDonnell, and was enlarged in 1822, by a loan of £500 from the late Board of First Fruits: it is a plain building with a tower and spire.' Attribution to CM proposed by O'Dwyer. For Alexander MacDonnell, 5th Earl of Antrim.

Additions and/or improvements including addition of new porch, removal of gallery, replacement of dead wall with Gothic arch opening into tower at W end, conversion of part of tower into baptistry, new tracery windows in nave, tiling of aisle and hot air heating. Caen stone font presented by Dowager Countess of Antrim. New stained glass window in baptistry presented by rector, another on S side of nave presented by rector and 'lady relative'.
