Nature: Conversion of half of New Barrack (purchased from Board of Ordnance by Poor Law Commissioners) into workhouse for 900 inmates. Cost of building  £3,251 plus £1,148 for fittings etc.  Contractor: William Hill. Opened 12 Jun 1841. First admissions 6 Jul 1841.

Nature: New workhouse for 700 inmates on 17-acre site at Strawhall. Built as a result of Government's having bought back for use as a cavalry barrack the part of the New Barrack which had been converted into the original workhouse in 1840-41.  Contract signed in or by Dec 1853. In course of erection, 1855.  Datestone on entrance block inscribed, 'Erected 1857'. Contractor: Michael Joyce, Fermoy. Cost £18,000.
