Nature: Cathedral reopened, 29 Mar 1878, after improvements 'made entirely at the expense of His Grace [the Duke of Devonshire]' and 'accomplished with admirable taste by te artchitect, Mr J.F. Fuller' (but IB 11, 1 Nov 1869, 253, gives architect as E.H. Carson). Extensive alterations in choir and chancel, new reredos, chancel floor raised and adorned with encaustic tiles, episcopal throne presented by Duke of Devonshire, oak stalls for choristers, new brass lectern, new pulpit. Memorial windows in progress.
