Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Carpenter and builder, of Dublin. Edward Carolin is probably the person of the same name who was admitted a freeman of the City of Dublin by virtue of service as a member of the Carpenters' Guild at Michaelmas 1795.(1) The 'Edward Caroline' who together with 'Charles Caroline' was similarly admitted at Christmas1813 may have been his son.(2) In or soon after 1810 he produced a proposal for shoring up the spire of St Werburgh's church, which, in spite of being recommended by FRANCIS JOHNSTON FRANCIS JOHNSTON , was not carried out.(3) On the evidence of the directories he appears to have been in partnership with his sons from about 1821 but from about 1840 with only one son (Edward George?) only. Pigot & Co.'s City of Dublin and Hibernian Provincial Directory (1824) describes the firm of Edward Carolin & Sons as 'Builder to H.M.'s Board of Works', while Pettigrew & Oulton's Dublin Almanac for 1841 describes Edward Carolin & Son as 'builders and contractors to the …Board of Ordnance'.

In the Grand Lodge of Freemasons, Molesworth St, there is a signed estimate by Edward Carolin, dated December 1817, for building a new Grand Lodge 'according to the Plan and Elevation'.(5) Edward Carolin also built the Royal Hibernian Academy in Lower Abbey St, to designs by FRANCIS JOHNSTON FRANCIS JOHNSTON , in 1824.(5)

Edward Carolin was a subscriber to William Stitt's The Practical Architect's Ready Assistant; or Builder's Complete Companion (Dublin, 1819).
