Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Civil engineer, of Dublin. Frederick Cairnes, a son of the classical economist John Elliott Cairnes, was born in Dublin on 28 December 1864,(1) while his father held the post of professor of jurisprudence and political economy at Queen's College, Galway. From October 1881 until January 1883 he studied engineering at University College, London.  He then became an apprentice at the Crewe locomotive works and, after sitting the University of London's BA examination in 1886, a pupil of J.C Park of the Bow Road Railway Works.  His training completed, he worked briefly in London, Australia and Mexico and for a longer period as engineer to the Bridgewater Estate's collieries in Manchester before returning to Dublin in 1899 to take up the post of engineer to
J. Jameson & Sons.  He designed a new duty-free warehouse for the company in North Anne Street in 1907.(2)   In the same year  he also designed improvements to Baldoyle Racecourse, Dublin.(3)

Cairnes died on 12 March 1944, survived by his wife, Lucy Barbara, daughter of Sir Hubert George Denman Croft, whom he had married on 1 June 1899.(4) At the time of the 1911 census he had three daughters and a son. He was buried in St Fintan's cemetery, Sutton, Dublin.(5)
