Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. Simon Aloysius Leonard was born in Dublin in 1903 and educated at Mount St Benedict's, Gorey, before taking a Bachelor of Agriculture degree at Trinity College, Dublin, from which he graduated in 1925. He farmed in Co. Meath until 1927, when he decided to follow his original interest in architecture and joined the architectural firm of his mother's sister's husband, RALPH HENRY BYRNE RALPH HENRY BYRNE . He went to Liverpool University to study architecture in 1931, graduating in 1935. In 1936 he received the B.Sc. degree from University College, Dublin. In the same year he was taken into partnership by Byrne,(1) on whose death on 15 April 1946 he assumed the running of the practice, which has retained the original name of W.H. BYRNE & SON  BYRNE & SON until the present day (2005).

Leonard died suddenly on 23 August 1976. He was described by his obituarist in the RIAI Yearbook as 'an exceptionally kind, gentle and tolerant man' of unfailing courtesy. He was a devout Catholic and was made an Officer of Merit of the Knights of Malta in 1968. He was married and had nine children. Two of his four sons, Brian and Mark, followed him into the firm of W.H. Byrne & Son.
