Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. Ralph Henry Byrne was born in Largo House,(1) Rathmines, Dublin, on 25 April 1877, the third - but second surviving - son of WILLIAM HENRY BYRNE WILLIAM HENRY BYRNE . He was educated at home and in England, at St George's School, Weybridge. Under an indenture dated 1 April 1896, he was articled to his father for five years.. He then spent six months in the office of Thomas Edward Marshall  in Harrogate before entering into partnership with his father on 10 April 1902.(2)  His father became blind in about 1913 and died on 28 April 1917. Following his father's death, Ralph Henry Byrne carried on the business under the name of William H. Byrne & Son. In 1936 he took his wife's nephew SIMON ALOYSIUS LEONARD  SIMON ALOYSIUS LEONARD into partnership.

In 1919 Ralph Byrne and THOMAS GEORGE SMITH  THOMAS GEORGE SMITH were awarded third prize in the Daily Express competition for designing model homes for clerical workers in connection with the Model Homes exhibition held in Central Hall, Westminster.(3) Byrne's design for industrial dwellings was commended in Part II of the RIAI competition in 1919.(4)

Byrne died at his house, 9 Ailesbury Road, on 15 April 1946 and was buried in Glasnevin cemetery.(5). He had married Mary Josephine Mangan (d. 1957) of Dunboyne Castle, Co. Meath, on 21 November 1905. Their only son, Frank William Barrett Mangan Byrne, a Captain in the Royal Irish Fusiliers, was born in 1910 and died on 30 May 1940.

In his obituary of Byrne in the RIAI Journal, JOHN JOSEPH ROBINSON  JOHN JOSEPH ROBINSON wrote: 'I do not think that any practice of an Irish Architect ever approached this one in volume. The even standard of efficient planning, good design and sound building which pervades all his work is a …testimony to his high sense of duty to his client, and his unremitting labours. In all his work there was no failure….In negotiation he was understanding in his views, approachable and easy to talk to, but his client's interest was never compromised. His was a personality rare and universally beloved. His office staff, his friends and relatives, his professional colleagues, his clients, the surveyors and builders with whom he worked, all join in speaking of him in terms of the highest praise. Of his charity and help to others I cannot speak, for the great breadth and depth of it will never be known.'

Byrne's pupils and assistants included ARNOLD FRANCIS HENDY ARNOLD FRANCIS HENDY , SHEILA TINDAL  SHEILA TINDAL and GUY HEMINGWAY YEOMAN.  GUY HEMINGWAY YEOMAN.
