Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of London, for whom see Directory of British Architects 1834-1914 (RIBA 2001), I, 317. In Ireland Butterfield designed the chapel at St Columba's College, Rathfarnham, 1875-1880, and St Mark's CI Church, Dundela, Belfast, 1876-1878. In about 1870 he was also consulted about the feasibility of extending Bangor Abbey to create a new parish church.(1)

Nature: Reconstruction of church of 1737 apart from tower. Consecrated 1849.. To accommodate about 600. Erected by private subscription. Atributed to WB in parish history.

Nature: New chapel. Designs in course of preparation, Dec 1875.Work began early Jul 1879  Cornerstone laid 1 Oct 1879. WB visits site, Mar 1880, when over £5000 already devoted to building. Dedicated to St Mark 1 Sep 1880. Cost about £7,000. Stained-glass windows designed by architect.

Nature: New church. FS laid 13 Oct 1876; consecrated 22 Aug 1878. Builders: Fitzpatrick Bros. Clerk of Works: Mr Wheeler. Cost: £10,304.  Chancel (36ft x 25ft) and transepts (20ft long) added to WB's design, 1891. New work consecrated 4 Jul 1891.
