Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. Charles Herbert Ashworth was born in Toxteth, Liverpool, on 18 May 1862, the second son of Alfred Ashworth, a builder, and his wife Maria, née Walters.(1) After receiving his early education in Chester and Liverpool, he was articled to Holme & Nichol, contractors, and later to Francis & George Holme, architects of Liverpool. The 1881 census records him as living in Garston, Lancashire, with his widowed mother, two sisters, and grandfather. In about 1885 he came to Dublin to work as an assistant in the office of THOMAS NEWENHAM DEANE THOMAS NEWENHAM DEANE . While he was with Deane he was engaged on drawings for the National Museum and Library and also acted as clerk of works during the erection of these buildings.(2) After spending some time in the office of WILLIAM MANSFIELD MITCHELL WILLIAM MANSFIELD MITCHELL ,(3) in July 1890 he was appointed architect to the Dublin Artisans' Dwellings Company at a salary of £250 per annum(4) which remained his primary business for the rest of his life.(5)   He was architect  o the Association for the Housing of the Very Poor(6) and to the Board of the Richmond, Whitworth and Richmond Hospitals.(7)  He also maintained an extensive private practice.(8)  In 1902 he married Harriet, fifth daughter of Richard Beckett of Siamberwen, Llangollen, by whom he had two daughters.

Described by his obituarist in the Irish Builder as retiring but 'charmingly pleasant and courteous', he was in poor health for some years before his death, which took place in Dublin on 10 January 1926.(9) Early the previous year he had taken into partnership his assistant JAMES BRAMWELL SMITH JAMES BRAMWELL SMITH ,(10) who succeeded him as architect to the Artisans' Dwellings Company and carried on the practice of ASHWORTH & ASHWORTH & amp; SMITH  SMITH until his own death in 1961. Other pupils and assistants included DENIS J. HICKIE  DENIS J. HICKIE and THOMAS .P. WARDROP.  THOMAS .P. WARDROP.
