Steward to Sir Charles Coote at Ballyfin, Co. Laois.   Campbell, who was born in 1808, died in 1874 at the age of sixty-six.(1)  The inscription on his gravestone in Ballyfin Church of Ireland church states that  'by his sole genius and resources he designed and constructed all the works of beauty and solidity in the demesne'.   According to Mulligan these works would have included 'almost certainly the tower, the ornamental rockwork, the menagerie and kennels'.(2)
