MCGOWAN, ALEXANDER *

Builder, of Arklow, Co. Wicklow, and proprietor of the Arklow Brick and Tile Co.. Alexander McGowan, who was born in Co. Antrim in 1863 or 1864 appears to have moved to Arklow in 1899 or 1900.(1) In 1901 he built himself a house at The Mount, Arklow.(2) Although recorded as a Presbyterian in the 1901 census, by the time of the 1911 census he had become a member of the Church of Ireland. He died on 30 October 1920 and was buried in the graveyard of Kilbride and Ennereilly parish church. His wife, Sarah Agnes, whom he had married in 1896 or 1897, and the youngest of his three children, Gretta, were buried in the same plot.
