Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Stuccadore and builder, of Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow.   In a letter offering his services to the 2nd Earl of Aldborough, dated 3 November 1795, Matthew Cogan stated that he had been born in Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow, and had worked for eleven years in London and elsewhere in England.   In Ireland he had worked for Lord Aldborough's brother-in-law Morley Saunders at Saundersgrove near Baltinglass.  In the same letter he announced the imminent publication of The True Informer, and Builders' Director, a book written by himself, which to be on sale for 2 shillings 8d.  Cogan wished to lease a piece of land near the bridge at Baltinglass from Lord Aldborough in order to build a house for himself with funds which he hoped to acquire from selling property which he owned in Cork.
