O'HANLON, JOHN LESLIE [2]

Architect and engineer of Dublin.  According to his 1901 census return, John Leslie O'Hanlon [2] was born in 1856 or 1857.  He  was probably a son of John Leslie O'Hanlon [2],  styling himself  'J. Leslie O'Hanlon, Jun.' in 1878 and 1879.(1)   As both the elder and the younger man were active in Dublin in the later nineteenth century, it is difficult to know for which of their recorded works each was responsible. The younger O'Hanlon probably worked with his father initially and then practised from various addresses in Dublin.   In 1881 he collaborated with  M. JUDGE  JUDGE on competition designs for St Peter's Catholic church in Drogheda in 1881.(2) He exhibited five designs, including designs for St Peter's, at the Irish Exhibition of Arts and Manufactures in Dublin in 1882 and two 'architectural drawings' at the Cork Industrial Exhibition the following year.(3) By 1907, according to Thom's Official Directory for that year, he was working in the Irish Lights Office. 

John Leslie O'Hanlon [2] died on 21 December 1943 at the age of eighty-seven and was buried in Malahide.  He appears to have married twice.  By his first wife, Annie, he had at least six children and by his second, Teresa, at least one more son, also named John Leslie O'Hanlon, who died in 1958.

A collection of designs for the house and demesne of Santry Park, Co. Dublin, in the National Library of Ireland (Ref. A.D. 1574 to 1586) includes a design or designs by a J. O'Hanlon.
