SIMINGTON, THOMAS ALOYSIUS

County engineer for for Co. Clare, 1945-1949. Thomas Aloysius Simington was born in Dublin in 1905, the third son son of John Joseph Simington, a manager and director of the Irish Times, and his wife, Bridget.(1) He studied engineering at Trinity College, Dublin, obtaining the BA and BAI degrees in 1927. He then worked for a variety of different companies as contractor's engineer. Projects with which he was associated included a deep-water jetty at Foynes, Co. Limerick, the Butt Bridge, Dublin, the new bridge at Kenmare, Co. Kerry, and the Cusack Stand at Croke Park, Dublin.
During the war Simington entered the public sector. He worked for Dublin Corporation from 1940 until 1944 when he became acting county engineer for Co. Kildare. In September 1945 he was appointed county engineer for Co. Clare. He resigned in October 1949 in order to return to the private sector, becoming joint managing director of the John Paul Construction Company. He retired in 1972. He died on 17 June 1994 and was buried in Deansgrange Cemetery.
