Builder, of Galway and South Africa. According to a brief article in the Tuam Herald of 26 June 1909, Joseph Cloherty, a son of Michael Cloherty, a Galway merchant, 'served his apprenticeship as an architect and builder to a leading firm in Dublin' and then emigrated to South Africa , where, he was 'rapidly climbing the ladder of success'. He had just completed a Catholic church in 'Paarl in 1909 to designs by the Cape Town architects Baker & Masey.
