Wood and stone carver, of Dublin, active from the 1730s until the 1750s, for whom see W.G. Strickland, A Dictionary of Irish Artists (1913), I, 525. John Houghton or Haughton was presumably the carver named Haughton who was responsible for Ionic capitals and the King's arms on the Parliament House, Dublin (1729-1739). He collaborated with JOHN KELLY [1] JOHN KELLY [1] on the carving of the coat of arms and other decorations on the stone pediment at Carton, Co. Kildare, in 1739. Two years later, in 1741, he was paid for executing the porch at Templestown charter school, and in 1747 he is recorded as making carvings for the interior of the house of Bishop Edward Synge in Kevin Street, Dublin. He collaborated with DAVID SHEEHAN DAVID SHEEHAN on at least two monuments, one to the Earl of Barrymore in the church at Castlelyons, Co. Cork, and the other to Miss Rogers in Christ Church, Cork, both executed in 1753. In the same year he also executed carving work at Dublin Castle for the King's birthday; further work at the castle followed in 1756. He may be the 'John Houghton, carver' who witnessed the will of John Eccles, of Dublin in 1777, but as, according to the Knight of Glin, there were at least three generations of carvers of this name in Dublin, the reference could be to a younger man.
'Mr. John Haughton, Carver' was one of the subscribers to JOHN AHERON' JOHN AHERON' s A general treatise on architecture, published in Dublin in 1754.
