Architect, of Dublin. James O'Farrell's marriage certificate of 3 September 1855, describes his occupation as 'architect' and that of his father, John, as 'traveller'. His address is given as 2 Queen's Terrace, a row of eighteen cottages which ran between Great Brunswick Street and Great Clarence Street. His bride was Ellen Hawker, daghter of William Hawker, 'captain mariner', of 14 Lower Erne Street. Farrell was still described as an architect at the time of the marriage of his son, also an architect, in Cardiff in 1881. Nothing further is known of him.
