Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer. John Joseph ( 'Nicky') Winters was born in 1902 and entered the Engineering School of University College, Dublin, in 1919, 'a modest young giant, of age some 17½ years and weight some 14½ stone'.(1) After obtaining his BE degree in 1931, he worked with EDWARD M. MURPHY  EDWARD M. MURPHY for some time. By 1932 he had set up his own office as a consulting engineer at 27 Molesworth Street, Dublin. Originally qualified as a mechanical and electrical engineer, he specialised in hospitals and water and sewerage schemes. Apart from additions to the lunatic asylum in Kilkenny and a proposed but unexecuted new asylum in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, all his hospital work was in Cos. Cavan and Kerry.(2) Between 1933 and the early 1940s he worked in partnership with three different architects: with EOGHAN BUCKLEY  EOGHAN BUCKLEY from 1933 to 1934, with RUPERT JONES  RUPERT JONES from 1935 to 1937,(3) and with DONALD TYNDALL  DONALD TYNDALL from 1937 until about 1941.

During World War II Winters joined the Army Corps of Engineers with the rank of Lieut. Colonel and was rapidly promoted to the command of the Construction Corps. After the war he returned to private practice until his appointment as official arbitrator under the Land Reference Committee, a post which he held until his death. A noted rugby player in his youth, he continued to be actively involved in the administrative side of the sport throughout his life. He died suddenly on 15 July 1961 at the age of fifty-nine. His wife survived him.
