Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Belfast. Reginald Sharman Wilshere, son of Sharman Judson Wilshere of Kirby Muxloe, Liecestershire,(1) was born on 10 April 1888, and was a boarder at Eastbourne College, Sussex, in 1902-1903. After serving articles with George Lawton Brown of Leicester and attending the Leicester College of Art, he moved to London, where he worked for various architects, spending two years with RALPH KNOTT RALPH KNOTT , who was then engaged on the London County Hall. While he was in London he was awarded a bronze medal with honours in the South Kensington School's building construction examination and won an open studentship at the Royal Academy, where he studied architectural design under REGINALD BLOMFIELD REGINALD BLOMFIELD , EDWIN LUTYENS  EDWIN LUTYENS and ASTON WEBB ASTON WEBB . He also played rugby with the Richmond Rugby Football Club and rowed for the Thames Rowing Club at Henley Regatta. In 1914 he was appointed senior assistant architect to Essex County Council, but towards the end of 1915, following the outbreak of the First World War, he enlisted in the Artists' Rifles(2) and subsequently obtained a commission in the Royal Engineers, serving with the Guards Division from 1916 until after the Armistice. He was awarded the Military Cross for bridging operations at the third battle of Ypres. After the war he resumed his post with Essex County Council, which was engaged in an extensive school building programme.

In April 1926 Wilshere was appointed architect to the Belfast Corporation Education Committee at a salary of £1,000 per annum.(3) He was the second incumbent; the first, WILLIAM GEORGE DAVIES WILLIAM GEORGE DAVIES , who had also previously worked for Essex County Council, had resigned early in 1926 on being appointed architect to Sheffield Corporation. By the end of the 1930s Wilshere had designed twenty-six new schools and improved many others. His new schools were characteristically built round quadrangles, with corridors open to the air. He believed in large schools because they allowed the pupils to be graded and because they made children feel that they belonged to an important institution.(4) Schools, he felt, should provide oases of beauty in their pupils' lives; in an article on the Hemsworth Square public elementary school, the Irish Builder noted that 'Mr Wilshere's own idea…is that if the children of a district have no beauty in their daily surroundings, they need beauty all the more in their schools'.(5) In 1930 he was awarded the first RIBA Ulster Architecture Medal for his Strandtown School.(6) He took a break from his responsibilities in May 1937 when he went to England to recuperate from a small operation.(7)

In 1948, towards the end of his career, Wilshere was given the additional responsibility of housing architect to the Corporation and allotted a deputy 'to relieve him of detailed work'.(8) As housing architect he was responsible for the Edenvale housing estate. He retired in 1954, when he was succeeded by Donald Allen Shanks. In all he had designed thirty-nine new schools. His staff marked his retirement by arranging an exhibition, 'Belfast Builds Schools'.(9) After his retirement he continued to practise privately. He died on 31 December 1961. His wife, Constance Mildred (née Powell), whom he had married in 1918, survived him.

Wilshere acted as assessor for two competitions, both held in 1934; these were for the Whiteabbey Sanatorium(10) and the Belfast Methodist College Whitla Hall.(11)

RIBA: passed preliminary examination, June 1904;(12) admitted student (placed third out of fifty-eight candidates who passed the Intermediate Exam), 1912;(13) associate, 1915;(14) elected fellow, 1933.
RSUA:(15) hon. treasurer, 1930-1932; president, 1935-1937, 1954-1956.
Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors: fellow.

His father, who was born in Ireland circa 1854, was working as a bank clerk and living with his father, Thomas Wilshere, at Evington Street, Leicester, at the time of the 1881 census.
