Architect, engineer and builder, of Cork. Robert Walker, a son of ROBERT WALKER [3] , city surveyor of Cork, was born circa 1835. From 1850 to 1854 he served his pupilage with ALEXANDER DEANE and JOHN BENSON and from 1854 to 1859 had charge of the general practice of Henry Clutton, FRIBA, in London. He opened his own office as an architect and engineer in Cork in 1860. His practice was a varied one, which included a large amount of commercial and industrial work in Cork, some domestic and some church work, the latter chiefly for the Methodists. Most of his commissions were for buildings in the city and county of Cork or for Cork-based businesses which had branches further afield. He came to the attention of the Dublin public in 1874, when he proposed a system of weirs to prevent sewage in the Liffey being deposited on the foreshore. Sir John Arnott offered to pay for the execution of the plan, but it the offer was not taken up.(1)
Walker was much involved in the affairs of the Society of Architects, of which he became president in 1889-1890 and again in 1896. On stepping down in 1897 he was presented with the Society's Gold Medal.(2) He was particularly concerned with the regulation of the profession and was 'one of the framers of the Architects' Registration Bill'.(3) He delivered a paper on the statutory qualification of architects at the International congress of Architects held in London in 1906.(4) He was a subscriber to the Architectural Publication Society's Dictionary in 1863 and again in 1892.
During the 1860s and 1870s Walker was also active as a builder. He was the first contractor to work on the demolition and rebuilding of St Finbarre's Cathedral to designs by WILLIAM BURGES , though he resigned the contract at an early stage.(5) In 1873 he built an addition to the Cork Lunatic Asylum to designs by WILLIAM ATKINS. (6)
Walker was a figure of some standing in Cork and was a JP for the city from 1900 or earlier. In 1894 he and WILLIAM HENRY HILL [1] were asked to prepare a report on the state of the foundations of the new wings of the Cork Municipal buildings, erected to the designs of the City Engineer, MICHAEL JOSEPEH MCMULLEN. (7) In 1905 he was appointed arbitrator in the matter of the compensation of landowners and occupiers whose lands were to be taken for the Kanturk water supply, 1905.(8)
By 1900 Walker had taken his son ROBERT WALKER [5] into partnership, practising thereafter as ROBERT WALKER & amp; SON. He died at 17 South Mall, Cork, aged seventy-five, on 31 January 1910, leaving a widow, Mary Ellen (née Proctor?). The practice was carried on under the same name by his son ROBERT WALKER [5] . Another son, Samuel Walker (b. 1875), was appointed engineer in the Indian Public Works Department in 1900.(9) His pupils included THOMAS WILLIAM BARRY.
Walker exhibited two portraits at at the Irish Institution, Dublin, in 1855 and 1856, and three architectural drawings at the Cork Industrial Exhibition in 1883.(10)
