BOND, FRANCIS WILLOUGHBY

Engineer-in-chief to Dublin Port and Docks Board 1941-1953. Francis Willoughby Bond, second son of Willoughby James Bond and his wife Rosa Mary Kerr née Bond was born on 3 February 1901. He was educated at Malvern College and Trinity College, Dublin, graduating in 1923 with high marks in his arts and engineering degrees. He entered the engineer's department of the Port of Dublin in 1923 as a pupil and was appointed temporary assistant engineer in 1924. In 1925 he carried out a marine survey in Sligo harbour and in 1926 went to Salonika for the Foundation Co. on the Salonika Plain reclamation works. He returned to Dublin Port in 1927 as temporary assistant engineer, and was responsible for many works, culminating in the design and supervision of the construction of Butt Bridge. In 1933 he returned to the chief engineer's Office. He was appointed chief assistant engineer in 1937 and chief engineer in 1941. In 1951 he fell ill, but courageously continued working until a few days before his death. He died at the age of fifty-two on 10 October 1953.
