Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer, of Belfast. John Wakeford, an Englishman, was born on 17 December 1833 and served a pupilage with R. Allen Stickney of Brighton. During the 1850s and 1860s he filled a series of local government posts in various parts of England, until in 1868 he was engaged as an assistant by JOHN JAMES MONTGOMERY JOHN JAMES MONTGOMERY , the Belfast borough surveyor. When Montgomery died in 1884 and was succeeded by his chief assistant, JOSIAH CORBETT BRETLAND JOSIAH CORBETT BRETLAND , Wakeford succeeded Bretland as chief assistant. His obituary in Min.Proc.Inst.CE describes him as 'a very careful and painstaking engineer of the second rank'. He was married to Elizabeth, née Chapman, and was the father of JOHN PERCY WAKEFORD. JOHN PERCY WAKEFORD.
