Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. Donald Tyndall appears to have been a son of Joseph Patrick Tyndall, a Dublin solicitor.(1) He qualified in London in 1926 and was working in the office of WALTER JOHN TAPPER  WALTER JOHN TAPPER when he became a member of the RIAI in the same year. He remained in London until 1928 or 1929 and then went to Shanghai, where he was involved in hospital design. In 1932 or 1933 he returned to Dublin. In October 1933 he was appointed an assistant architect in the Corporation's housing architect's department on a temporary basis;(2) the appointment was extended to a five-year contract at a salary of £450 per annum in February 1935.(3) From 1937 until the early 1940s he worked in partnership with the engineer JOHN J. WINTERS  JOHN J. WINTERS on a new county hospital for Cavan and other projects.

Tyndall's career was interrupted by the Second World War, during which he served as an officer in the Royal Engineering Corps, attaining the rank of major. After the war he established his own practice in Dublin. Much of his work was for local authorities, including a number of housing schemes in Co. Offaly and hospitals and clinics in Co. Kerry. In 1961 Brian Hogan became a partner(4) and in 1968 Richard P. Hurley. Tyndall himself retired in 1968 but remained as a consultant to the practice until his death in 1974 or 1975.

The Irish Architectural Archive holds three drawings by Tyndall, donated by Patricia Brady in 2013 (Acc. 2013/079 ).
