Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Sculptor, of Dublin and London, for whom see W.G. Strickland, A Dictionary of Irish Artists (1913), II, 466-470, and J. Gilmartin, 'Peter Turnerelli, Sculptor', BIGS 10, Pt. 4 (1967), 1-17. Turnerelli, who became a portrait sculptor of international reputation, was, according to Potterton,(1) 'the one sculptor patronised by Roman Catholics in Ireland in the first half of the nineteenth century'. His monumental work in Ireland consists of the memorials to Bishop Francis Moylan (1735-1815) in the Catholic cathedral in Cork and to Father Thomas Betagh (1739-1811) formerly in the church of SS. Michael and John, Dublin, and the high altar in the pro-cathedral in Marlborough Street, Dublin.
