Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Lawyer and author of Plans of Cottages for Agricultural Labourers in Ireland (1868). Charles James Trench, second son of Francis Trench, of Sopwell Hall, Co. Tipperary, was born on 5 April 1806. He was admitted to Trinity College, Dublin, on 1 July 1822 and gained the BA degree in 1827. He was called to the Irish Bar in in 1830, became chairman of the Co. Dublin quarter sessions and eventually a QC. He died on 31 August 1882.

In 1868 Trench published Plans of Cottages in response to the fact that a prize sponsored by the Marquess of Abercorn through the Royal Agricultural Society of Ireland for the best design for a labourer's cottage had not been awarded. As the competition remained open and publication of the winning design by the Society would not therefore occur for some time, Trench hastily published his own plans 'in the hope that they may be of use to landowners who purpose building Labourers' Houses this year'. Trench's designs were for single and double cottages, some with minimal Tudor Gothic details. There is no indication as to who drew them.
