Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer, of Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh.  Francis Gerald Townsend, who was born in Abersychan, Monmouthshire, Wales, in 1875 or 1876, was the elder son of FRANCIS EDWARD TOWNSEND FRANCIS EDWARD TOWNSEND , under whom he served a three-year pupilage. He was engaged on various projects in England as a contractor's engineer before coming to Ireland, apparently in the later 1890s, to work on the Buncrana to Carndonagh railway in Co. Donegal and on the Burtonport and Ballyshannon extensions. After living for a time in Ballyshannon, in about 1916 he moved to Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, and entered into partnership with his father, who had settled there.(1)   The partnership, known as as F.E. Townsend & Son, lasted until at least 1928,(2) but during the 1930s Francis Gerald Townsend appears to have been working on his own, his father having presumably died or retired. The Irish Builder records work by him for a number of district councils in Co. Fermanagh and the neighbouring counties and, towards the end of his career, for the Co. Fermanagh education authority.(3) He died in 1942 or 1943.(4) According to the 1911 census he married his Donegal-born wife, Kathleen Rosa, in 1900 or 1901 but had no surviving children when the census was taken.
