Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and CE, of Granard, Co. Longford, active from circa 1890 until 1922. John Thompson, son of William Thompson of Granard, Co. Longford, was, according to his 1911 census return, was born in Co. Longford in 1855 or 1856.  By his own account he spent two years as the pupil of his architect brother ATWELL THOMPSON. ATWELL THOMPSON. (1)  He set up his own office  in Granard in about 1890 and practised extensively  in Co. Longford and the adjoining counties. He had been appointed an assistant county surveyor for Co. Longford by 1900 or earlier(2) and was architect to Ballymahon, Granard and Cavan Boards of Guardians and district councils by 1901.   He was also clerk of petty sessions at Granard from 1900 or earlier.(3) He died suddenly in Dublin on 21 November 1922 and was buried in Deansgrange cemetery.(4)  According to his 1911 census return he had married his wife, Sara, in 1886 or 1887and had four children.

RIAI: proposed for membership by WALTER GLYNN DOOLIN  WALTER GLYNN DOOLIN and RUDOLF MAXIMILIAN BUTLER RUDOLF MAXIMILIAN BUTLER , seconded by FREDERICK BATCHELOR  FREDERICK BATCHELOR and GEORGE PATRICK SHERIDAN GEORGE PATRICK SHERIDAN , 1901, but application rejected.
