Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Drogheda. Finian Tallan was born on 9 January 1881, a son of Thomas Tallan, town councillor of Drogheda. After serving a three-year apprenticeship with FREDERICK SHAW  FREDERICK SHAW of Drogheda, he moved to Dublin, where he worked as an assistant in the office of FREDERICK HICKS  FREDERICK HICKS and, briefly, with BATCHELOR & BATCHELOR & amp; HICKS, the partnership formed by Hicks and FREDERICK BATCHELOR  FREDERICK BATCHELOR in the summer of 1905. In 1903, while he was still working for Hicks, he won the competition for designing the Carnegie Library in Drogheda.(1) He set up his own practice in Drogheda in 1905 but died suddenly and prematurely at Eccles Street, Dublin, on 19 June 1908.(2) He was buried with his parents in the Chord cemetery, Drogheda. He was unmarried.

The Irish Architectural Archive holds Tallan's diary for 1904 and his letter book for 1903-1906 (Acc. 2015/60).

RIAI: elected member, 29 May 1907,(3) having been proposed by Frederick Shaw and seconded by GEORGE PATRICK SHERIDAN  GEORGE PATRICK SHERIDAN and Frederick Hicks.(4)
