Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

County surveyor for Co. Derry, 1900-1924. Charles Boddie, a son of George Boddie, of Moneymusk, Aberdeenshire, was born on 8 October 1861 at Straffan, Co. Kildare. He was educated in Belfast and was a student of the Royal University, where he studied arts and engineering. He received his engineering training with the Belfast & Northern Counties Railway Company under ROBERT COLLINS ROBERT COLLINS . In 1889 he was appointed the company's resident district engineer at Coleraine, remaining in this position until his appointment as county surveyor for Co. Derry in February 1900. He was the first county surveyor to be appointed under the Local Government (Ireland) Act of 1898. In 1905 he was short-listed for the position of county surveyor for Derbyshire.(1)

Boddie's proposed reorganization of the road system in Co. Derry remained unexecuted at the time of his death, which took place at his home in Lodge Road, Coleraine, on 6 June 1924, after an illness lasting over six months. He had married Elizabeth Anne, daughter of Thomas Edwards, of Stisted, Braintree, Essex, on 3 August 1885, and had five sons and a daughter.
