Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Clerk of works and architect, active in Cos. Fermanagh and Monaghan in the 1830s and 1840s. According to Mulligan, there is evidence that from as early as 1831 George Sudden was employed as a clerk of works by Evelyn John Shirley, of Lough Fea, Co. Monaghan, with a yearly salary and a farm on the estate.(1)  In 1837 John Creighton of Crom Castle, Co. Fermanagh, contracted for the building of a linen hall at Lisnaskea to Sudden's design(2) and three years later, when Crom Castle, newly completed to designs by EDWARD BLORE EDWARD BLORE , was destroyed by fire, he appointed Sudden to rebuild the house to Blore's specifications.(3) Sudden also designed the Fever Hospital at Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan in 1841.(4)    In partnership with WILLIAM WALKER  WILLIAM WALKER he carried out  the great hall at Lough Fea, originally provided for by THOMAS RICKMAN THOMAS RICKMAN , but only begun in 1841 after Rickman's death.(5)
