Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Belfast. Born 14 February 1908, he was active from the 1930s until the 1960s. In 1935 Valentine Smyth formed a partnership with BENJAMIN COWSER  BENJAMIN COWSER which practised as COWSER & COWSER & amp; SMYTH SMYTH . The partnership lasted until both men joined the army during World War II. After the war Cowser set up in practice in London, but in 1951 he returned to Belfast and rejoined Smyth, the new partnership being known as SMYTH & SMYTH & amp; COWSER COWSER . Cowser retired in the mid 1960s; Smyth retired to Malta in 1969 and died 24 November 1983.(1)

RIBA:(2) elected associate, 1935; elected fellow, 1952; member of council prior to 1957.
RSUA:(3) elected associate by 1937; elected member circa 1948; council member, 1951-52; no longer on list of members by 1971.
