Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

County surveyor for the eastern division of Co. Galway, 1891-1907. John Smith was born on 19 April 1865. After training for six years as a contractor's engineer, in 1887 he was awarded the third Whitworth Scholarship and a National Scholarship in Science. He held the latter at the Royal College of Science, South Kensington, where he studied under Joseph Harrison until 1889. From March 1889 he was Royal Engineer Surveyor to the Newcastle-upon-Tyne district. In 1891 he won the competition for the county surveyorship of East Galway. He remained in this position until his death, and also ran a private practice in Ballinasloe. He died on 14 February 1907 from the effects of a cold which developed into pneumonia(1) and was buried in Creagh cemetery.  He had married Frances Eleanore Shaw, daughter of Henry Shaw, JP, of Ballymote, in 1902.(2)
