Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

John Smart is described as 'builder to the Custom House' in the Dublin Wide Streets Commissioners' minutes on 22 November 1798.(1) A person of this name was admitted a freeman of the city at Midsummer 1795 as a member of the Carpenters' Guild by Grace Especial,(2), which suggests that he came from elsewhere. He is possibly the 'Mr Smart' who was involved in building additions to John Claudius Beresford's house , Belcamp, Co. Dublin, where work was measured by Bryan Bolger in May 1801.(3)
