SANDYS, FRANCIS [1]

Architect, of Dublin. Francis Sandys, who studied drawing with ROBERT WEST , is first heard of in 1747 as one of the prizewinners in the Dublin Society's drawing examination for boys under the age of sixteen.(1) He may be the Francis Sandys who showed printed linen to the Dublin Society in March 1759;(2) otherwise nothing is heard of him until 1769, when he entered the Dublin Royal Exchange competition.(3) He exhibited designs for various buildings at the Society of Artists every year between 1769 and 1772. In about 1772 or 1773 he leased a house in Dawson Street(4) from Sir James Caldwell, Bt., for 140 years at an annual rent of £66 and refurbished it.(5) Works by him during the latter part of this period, including a number of public fountains in Dublin, are recorded by Bolger, Brewer and Ferrar. He died in 1795; according to Ferrar his death took place at Bellevue, Co. Wicklow, where he had designed a Gothic banqueting room and a Turkish tent for Peter La Touche.(6) His will dated 23 February 1794 was proved on 5 September 1795.(7) He may be the Francis Sandys who married Elizabeth Sheilds in Wicklow on 23 October 1752.(8) He was the father of FRANCIS SANDYS [2] , with whom he is sometimes confused, JOSEPH SANDYS , and probably ROBERT SANDYS . He was a subscriber to Philip Levi Hodgsons's, Complete Measurer (1788).(9)
