'J.W.L.', of London, was a short-listed entrant in the Dublin Royal Exchange competition of 1768-9.(1) Writing to JAMES GANDON from Dublin in 1769 about the progress of the competition, Joseph Dean Bourke expressed the view that of all the entries 'the three best should be Gandon, Stephens, and J.W.L., which letters, I am informed is Wright or Wrighton, lately returned from Rome'; J.W.L.'s design, he added, 'really, has great merit'.(2) Wright or Wrighton has not been identified.
