RYAN, JOHN [2]
- Born: - Died: -
Architect, of Dublin, active in the 1850s and 1860s. John Ryan is described as having been 'for many years associated with the late Mr Caldbeck [WILLIAM FRANCIS CALDBECK] , architect, of Dublin, in the design and carrying out of many important works'.(1) He was the father of WILLIAM PATRICK RYAN . Whether he was any relation of the Limerick building contractor of the same name is not clear, though his son's Limerick connections suggest that this may have been the case. Equally he may have had Co. Cavan connections; his only attributable works to be recorded in the Dublin Builderare St Joseph's Convent, School, and Orphanage in Cavan, the church at Maghera, near Virginia, Co. Cavan, and perhaps also the church of St Dympna in Lavey, Co. Cavan. He is also known to have designed additions to the Catholic church of Dromeela, Co. Leitrim.(2) A John Ryan was admitted to the Royal Dublin Society's School of Drawing in Architecture in 1849,(3) and an architect of this name appears in the Dublin directories between 1859 and 1880 (see addresses, below).
Addresses:(4) 1 Bessborough Avenue, North Strand, 1859;(5) 2 Hackett's Buildings, North Strand, 1861-1863; 14 Newcomen Place, 1864-1870; 45 North Strand Road, 1871-1876; 210 Great Brunswick Street, 1877-1879; 22 Great Brunswick Street, and 2 North Richmond Street, 1880.
