Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

WILLIAM JOSEPH WELLAND  WILLIAM JOSEPH WELLAND and WILLIAM GILLESPIE  WILLIAM GILLESPIE were appointed joint architects to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in May 1860, following the death of JOSEPH WELLAND JOSEPH WELLAND . Both men were already in the employment of the Commissioners. They held the post until the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland on 31 December 1870. During their ten years in office, they developed an increasingly personal and idiosyncratic version of Gothic in the churches which they designed. The long list of Welland and Gillespie's works in this database, which is based principally on the collection of church designs in the Representative Church Body's library, should be treated with some caution. Like Joseph Welland before them, Welland and Gillespie routinely signed designs for churches within their remit, though some of these are known to have been by other architects. In a number of cases, therefore, their signature signifies approval rather than authorship. Presumably all designs required their approval, those by well-known architects as well as those by the Commissioners' district representatives for minor works. Hard and fast attribution of some of the drawings in the RCB library on grounds of draughtsmanship or style must make allowance for two other possibilities: first, that the drawings may in some cases be copies made by Welland and Gillespie's draughtsmen of designs by outside architects; second, that in the case of the district architects, a 'house style' may have been imposed by the central office.

Address: Office of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Mornington House, 24 Merrion Street Upper. Dublin.

Font also designed by W & G. Described in 1882 as follows: ‘…of the Church-Warden style of architecture originally, it has by successive enlargements been almost trebled in size, in fact it is now much broader than long, and almost ashideous and barn-like a structure as can be found in the wholeisland…Perhaps a fair notion may be attained by imagining three parallelogrammatic churches posited side by side, with a five-footchancel such as would be quite out of proportion for one such church, let alone three. A heart-rending gallery of great linear proportions (i.e. length without breadth), and in the midst of it an
ancient organ to complete the dreary picture.’)
