Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Mosaic and stained glass artist, of Dublin. Ethel Rhind, the daughter of an engineer,(1) was born in Bengal circa 1879 and attended school in Derry. In 1902 she won a three-year scholarship to study mosaic at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. She also learnt how to make stained glass under the instruction of ALFRED CHILD ALFRED CHILD . In 1907 she joined SARAH PURSER' SARAH PURSER' s An Tur Gloine studio, where she remained until 1939. She is especially noted for her opus sectile work, a form of mosaic in which figurative elements are made from pieces of stone, glass or shell cut to the desired outline rather than composed from a large quantity of tiny tiles or tesserae. She was a member of the Guild of Irish Art Workers.
