Engineer and architect, of Margaret Square, Newry, Co. Down. Samuel Wilson Reside was born on 27 December 1872 and educated at the Methodist College, Belfast. On leaving school in 1888 he trained with the Belfast engineering firms of Combe, Barbor & Combe until 1891 and Workman & Clarke from 1891 to 1895. After a period of private study and a year-long visit to the United States, he entered private practice in 1899 and also became engineer to Larne Rural District Council's sanitary and water works. In 1912, when he applied for membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers of Ireland, he was engineer to Newry No. 1 Rural District Council, to Newry Board of Guardians and joint engineer to the Rathfriland water supply. He was also engineer to the Kilmorey estates in Cos. Down and Armagh. He died in 1953 or 1954.(1) He had married circa 1901. The practice was carried on by his son Gerald Wilson Reside, MBE, JP, B.Sc., MICEI, who gave many of the the old records of the practice to the Newry Museum. Others were previously destroyed in a fire at the office.
