BERGIN, WILLIAM MARMADUKE

Engineer. William Bergin was born in Cork on 25 March 1877, a younger son of Osborn Roberts Bergin, lecturer in Celtic studies at Queen's College, Cork, and his wife Sarah Reddin.(1) The distinguished Irish scholar Osborn Joseph Bergin was his elder brother. A Congregationalist, William Bergin was educted at Cork Grammar School and Queen's College, Cork, where he received the BA degree in 1898 and the BE degree in 1899.(2) He held the post of city engineer in Tientsin, China. He died in England in 1956. He was a cousin of STEPHEN WILLIAM FARRINGTON.

(2) Possibly these dates sould be the other way round, as his name appears on the Student Admissions Register for 4th Arts 1898-99, while he attended his third and final year of Engineering in 1897-98.
