Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Civil engineer, of Dunlavin, Co. Wicklow.   According to his 1911 census return, John Ramsay was born in Co. Donegal in 1861 or 1862 and had an ME degree from Queen's University.   He succeeded JOSEPH BERRY  JOSEPH BERRY as architect to Shillelagh Union in 1891(1) and was an assistant county surveyor for Co. Wicklow from 1900 or earlier until 1918 or later. At the time of the 1911 census, he had been married to his wife, Mary Elizabeth, for eighteen years and had three children

Nature: Reconstruction of glebe house dating from 1814, which had become uninhabitable. Roof raised 3 ft and bow windows addedto all front rooms on each side of hall door. Gave services as honorary architect. Presented with tea silver in recognition of his work on church and rectory, 1899.

Nature: New masonic hall for accommodation of United Service Lodge 215 opened 3 Jun 1898.  Red brick with white stone facings, containing 'caretakers' apartments, lodge, and committee room with spacious ante-rooms and a commodious banqueting hall'.   Contractor: John Cromer, Lucan.  Cost: £1000 'and there is still a considerable sum required to clear the building account'.
