Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

County suveyor for Co. Carlow, 1911-1942. John Philip Punch, second son of John Philip Punch of Fermoy, Co. Cork, by his second wife, Ellen O'Sullivan,(1) was born on 4 December 1880. He attended St Colman's College, Fermoy, and Clongowes Wood College (1896-98) and then spent two years at University College, Dublin, and a further three years at Queen's College, Cork, obtaining the BE degree of the Royal University of Ireland in 1903. From 1904 to 1905 he served a one-year pupilage under JOHN HENRY RYAN JOHN HENRY RYAN , followed by a further year in private practice in Fermoy.(2) In 1906 he joined the staff of Dublin Corporation as an assistant engineer but was back in Fermoy by February 1908. After applying without success for the Co. Offaly county surveyorship in August 1909,(3)  he was appointed county surveyor for Co. Carlow in August 1911 in succession to EDWARD TANKERVILLE QUILTON EDWARD TANKERVILLE QUILTON . He remained in the post until his retirement on 31 December 1942, when he returned to Fermoy. He died on in Fermoy on 14 February 1967.
