Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and measurer, of Dublin, active from 1823 or earlier until 1847, or later. Matthew Price first appears in Wilson's Dublin Directory in 1823 with an address at 27 Golden Lane, moving in 1828 to 77 Aungier Street. In 1829 he was appointed architect to Christ Church Cathedral and as such was responsible for the extensive restoration of 1830-1833.(1) He is named as cathedral architect in Pettigrew & Oulton's Dublin Almanac for 1841(2) and also in the edition for 1847.(3) In 1843 he was paid £2.3s by Trinity College, Dublin, for making a plan of the library.(4) See also MATTHEW PRICE [2] MATTHEW PRICE [2] , who may have been his son and with whom there may be some confusion.

Nature: Restoration, including remodelling of transepts and choir with introduction of Perpendicular features. 'Those hideous arrangements had been perpetrated by the Restoration (!) of 1831, and consisted chiefly in a series of closets or pantries, a queer sort of roofing or panelling for the choir, "the substitution of a sort of beds for stalls," singular pranks with the windows and transepts , and the demolition of St. Mary's Chapel' (Freeman's Journal)
