PRENDERGAST, PATRICK JOSEPH
- Born: 1853 Died: 1911
County surveyor for the West Riding of Co. Galway, 1902-1910. Patrick Prendergast was born at Clifden, Co. Galway, in March 1853. He studied engineering at Queen's College, Galway, and from circa 1877 to 1886 was employed by the Great Northern Railway Company.(1) He subsequently worked for the Midland Great Western Railway. In 1892 he was appointed borough surveyor of Athlone and in 1902 county surveyor for the West Riding of Galway in succession to JAMES PERRY. (2)
Prendergast retired on a pension for health reasons in October 1910(3) and died in Galway on 1 February 1911.(4) He married Ellen (née Kyle) and was the father JOHN KYLE PRENDERGAST and of William Hilary Prendergast (1895-1957), who had a long career as a transport engineer in India and Burma before becoming Professor of Engineering at University College, Galway, in 1947.(5) . His pupils and assistants included HARRY JACKSON CROSSLEY.
