Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

City surveyor of Belfast, 1926-1928. Edmund Pinkerton, who was born in Belfast on 16 July 1865, attended the Royal Academical Institution, 1883-1885, and Queen's College, Belfast, 1885-1890, obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Englineering from the Royal University in 1891. From 1890 to 1892 he seved a two-year pupilage with GEORGE PARNALL CULVERWELL  GEORGE PARNALL CULVERWELL and ROBERT INKERMAN CALWELL ROBERT INKERMAN CALWELL ; work in this period included preparations for the Downpatrick to Ardglass railway. In 1892 he entered the service of Belfast Corporation as an assistant engineer. He was promoted to assistant city surveyor in 1918 and to city surveyor, at a salary of £1,250 per annum, in May 1926.(1) He retired in 1928 and died in his ninety-seventh year in 1962.(2)   His pupils and assistants included GODFREY ALAN KEITH ROBERTSON. GODFREY ALAN KEITH ROBERTSON.

Pinkerton was a man of culture. He had shown a particular aptitude for Greek when he was at the university, and enjoyed reading Greek and Latin poetry for recreation. He also played the flute in the Belfast Philharmonic Orchestra. He was the brother-in-law of WILLIAM JAMES PERRIN WAKEMAN.  WILLIAM JAMES PERRIN WAKEMAN.
