PENTLAND, THOMAS

Architect, of Belfast and Donaghadee, Co. Down. Thomas Pentland, who, according to the 1911 census, was born in Co. Down in 1871 or 1872, served his articles with JAMES JOHN PHILLIPS of Belfast. He was in private practice in Belfast from the 1890s and in 1906 was appointed town surveyor of Donaghadee.(1) He resigned this position in 1908 on being appointed architect to the Belfast Villa Colony Co.(2) His name does not appear again in the Irish Builder until 1925,(3) after which a steady stream of work - mainly houses and shops - is recorded.
Pentland died on 14 September 1940 at the age of sixty-nine. He was married twice, first in 1894 to Sarah Remington Smyth (d. 1903) and second in 1910 to his sister-in-law Susan Isobel Smyth. He had four daughters by his first wife and at the time of the 1911 census two sons by his second. Both these sons became architects: Thomas Parkhill Pentland, LRIBA, worked in the office of Samuel Stevenson & Sons in Belfast, and William H. Pentland was on the staff of the Air Ministry in England at the time of his father's death.
Pentland's assistants included PATRICK GREGORY and JACKSON GRAHAM SMYTH.
