Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and Surveyor General, 1731-1733. Edward Lovett Pearce was a son of General Edward Pearce and his wife Frances, daughter of the Dublin merchant Christopher Lovett, who had been Lord Mayor of the city in 1676-7. His family, which also owned a property at Whitlingham, Norfolk, had wide-reaching and, in some cases, influential connections in both England and Ireland. His date of birth appears to have been in the late 1690s. He was thus still only a child when his father secured him an army commission in 1707. Details of his subsequent military career are scanty: he was a cornet in his father's regiment by 1714 and a captain in Molesworth's Dragoons under Colonel Neville by 1721 or 1722.

Even less is known of Pearce's architectural formation. His father was a first cousin of Sir John Vanbrugh,(1) so that it is reasonable to suppose that Vanbrugh had a hand in it;  there may be other indications that this was so,(2) but as yet no solid documentation has been found to confirm it, nor is there much evidence that Vanbrugh's baroque style influenced Pearce's classicism, which was rooted in a close study of Palladio. In 1723-1724 Pearce made the Grand Tour: he was in Nimes in August 1723, when he drew the Maison Carré;(3) in Florence in September; in Rome in October, in Bologna and the Veneto, looking at Palladio's buildings, in April 1724, and in Geneva, travelling home in a hurry, the following month. While he was in Florence he was in contact with ALESSANDRO GALILEI  ALESSANDRO GALILEI in connection with statues for 'Mr Conolly' - presumably William Conolly, whom Pearce assisted in the building of his new seat at Castletown, Co. Kildare, - and drawings for the 'Palace'.(4) He was in Dublin by May 1725. Early in 1728, after some months of manoeuvering, he succeeded in becoming a member of the Irish parliament as representative of the borough of Ratoath, Co. Meath.(5)  Later in 1728 he was selected as architect of the new Parliament House on College Green, over the head of the Surveyor General, THOMAS BURGH. H THOMAS BURGH. H is ambition to become Surveyor General himself was realised in January 1731, following Burgh's death the previous month. Among the public works which required his attention at the beginning of the 1730s were the Navan Turnpike, of which he became a trustee in 1730,(6) the Newry Canal,(7) the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, of which he was appointed overseer of works in 1731 and a governor in 1732,(8) and Dr Steeven's Hospital.(9)

In 1731 Pearce leased the property of Tylorcain Hall and the Grove, Stillorgan, Co. Dublin, from John Joshua, 2nd Viscount Allen, of Stillorgan House. He was knighted on 10 March 1732 awarded the Freedom of the Dublin on 6 April 1733. and died 'of a violent cholick in his stomach' at Stillorgan, on 7 December 1733. He was buried on 10 December at Donnybrook cemetery, where his grave is no longer identifiable. He married his first cousin, Anne (d. 1749), daughter of Lieutenant General Thomas Pearce, by whom he had four daughters.

Three years after his death Pearce was the subject of a scurrilous attack in the form of a poem, 'The Toast', partly written in Latin and published in 1736 by William King, an Oxford don, under the pseudonym Frederick Scheffer. King, who admitted to having a personal grudge against him, alleged that Pearce, among other colourful vices and misdemeanours, had relied on RICHARD CASTLE' RICHARD CASTLE' s advice, skill and labour in the construction of the Parliament House but had denied Castle both credit and payment for his work. In fact the genesis and extent of Pearce's professional relationship with Castle is unknown, but it is clear that both at the Parliament House and for the Newry Canal works he relied on Castle's expertise. In 1769, the anonymous writer of an article in the Freeman's Journal on the Parliament House, who attributed the design to both Pearce and Castle, neatly summed up the complementary characteristics of the two architects: 'the one a Gentleman of Rank and liberal Education, [who] seems to have possessed a classic and polished Taste…The other a Foreigner of great Experience and Skill in building…[who] does not appear to have possessed much Elegance of Fancy'.(10)   Maurice Craig refers to a 'tradition' that WILLIAM HALFPENNY  WILLIAM HALFPENNY also worked under Pearse at the Parliament House,(11) but documentary corroboration is lacking. Halfpenny is known to have been in Ireland in 1732, while Eileen Harris has observed that in his New and Compleat System of Architecture (1749) he 'drew mainly upon his experience of moderate-sized houses in Ireland by architects like Edward Lovett Pearce and Richard Cassels' and that his designs in The Modern Builder's Assistant (1757) show 'even more evidence of a connection with Edward Lovett Pearce and Ireland than his designs in A New and Compleat System'.(12)

Three volumes of architectural drawings by Pearce, Vanbrugh and Castle formerly belonged to Lord Allen's descendants the Probys of Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire when they were catalogued by Howard Colvin and Maurice Craig in Architectural Drawings in the library of Elton Hall by Sir John Vanbrugh and Sir Edward Lovett Pearce (1964). Two of the three volumes are now in the Victoria & Albert Museum (E.2123 and E.2124). The third album containing designs for Stillorgan House and demesne remains in the Probys' possession. Pearce's name has been less reliably associated with a small group of drawings in the Papworth Collection in the RIBA Drawings Collection. His annotated copy of Palladio's Quattro Libri dell'Architettura is in the RIBA Library.
