Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of London, for biography and works of whom see Howard Colvin, A Biographical dictionary of British architects 1600-1840 (4th  edn, 2008), 775-779. GEORGE PAPWORTH  GEORGE PAPWORTH was his younger brother and pupil. John Buonarotti Papworth designed only minor works in Ireland, the most substantial being the Catholic church at Killybegs, Co. Donegal, 1834-1844, for Alexander Murray of Broughton, Wigtownshire. His design for neo-classical gate piers, published as Plate 20 in his Designs for Rural Residences (1818) was used by WILLIAM VITRUVIUS MORRISON  WILLIAM VITRUVIUS MORRISON and others for the entrances to Irish demesnes.

The Irish Architectural Archive holds a sheet of plans from Papworth's office for the stables at Castlebar House, Co. Mayo, 1839.(Guinness Collection, Acc. 96/068.5/13).

Date: 1839
Nature: New Gothic cruciform church with tower, 'the model taken from an ancient ruin in in the neighbourhood'. Executed entirely by local tradesmen. For Alexander Murray of Broughton, Wigtownshire. Designed between 1834 and 1839. Begun early 1842. Opened 25 Dec 1844.

Nature: Design for proposed gates & lodges attributable to JBP on basis of similarity of screen to design in Rural Residences.  For Marquess of Sligo. (Executed with one lodge only, which was demolished and replaced by a larger lodge c. 1905.)
