PAINE, JAMES #
- Born: 1717 Died: 1789
English architect, for whom see Howard Colvin, A Biographical dictionary of British architects 1600-1840 (3rd edn., 1995), 721-726, and Peter Leach, James Paine (1988). Arthur Young, when he visited Ballymote, Co. Sligo, in 1776, noted that about two years earlier the Hon. Thomas Fitzmaurice had undertaken the promotion of the linen weaving industry at Ballymote and had invited James Paine to prepare plans for the redevelopment of the town, which were to include a new street layout, market house, master weaver's house, the conversion of an existing building into an inn, and a new castle-style mansion house for himself. (1) No plans for the project are known, however, nor is there any evidence that they were even partly executed.(2)
