ORLEBAR, CUTHBERT KNIGHTLEY #

English railway engineer, active in Ireland between 1864 and 1869. Cuthbert Orlebar, who served his pupilage with GEORGE WILLOUGHBY HEMANS , was employed by Hemans on the Enniskillen & Bundoran Railway for two years as assistant engineer and for a third year as resident engineer. According to his obituarist, 'the wild lake-scenery, and the rough surroundings of his life, possessed a charm for him equalling that of a sea-life to many men'. From 1867 to 1869 he was resident engineer for part of the Athenry & Ennis Railway; he also made contract surveys for the Wexford & New Ross Railway. In 1870 he returned to England, where he spent the rest of his life.
